Bornin China, Zhou is a female artist and independent curator who spent her lastfive and half year (2007 -2013) living and working in Darwin. Using a widevariety of media in her practice, Zhou is a multidisciplinary artist. Zhoufocuses on subjects such as religion practice and food culture of the nomad,the intricate relationship between the land and its dwellers and thecorrelation of physical and imaginary spaces. Her work has been represented inmany group exhibitions and events such as: TestingGround (2013) at Salamanca Centre for the Arts, Art on Wheels (2012), a public art project in Darwin, Art of theNomad (2012) Chan Contemporary Art Space, Darwin, Territory Time (2011) at Chan Contemporary Art Space, Darwin, Territory Time Touring project (2010 -2011) - Crate59 Cairns, MOP project Sydney, Free Range Inc. Perth and WatchThis Space Alice Springs, SeabreezeFestival (2011) Nightcliff, ParapFestival (2011) Parap, and TheGleaners – a lost glove project at Darwin Visual Art Association (DVAA)Darwin. She has also held solo exhibitions Phoenixtails and flies (2008) at DVAA, Darwin and Grass is Greener in Alice Springs (2009) at Watch This Space inc.Alice Springs.

Zhou’scuratorial projects are directly related to the research topics in her artpractise. She emphasises the connections between artworks and their exhibitingspace and the unique experience that viewers gain in an exhibition. Attemptingto position exhibitions independently from institutional hierarchies, Zhouempowers artists by applying a flexible curatorial approach. She successfullycurated Art on Wheels (2012) withPublic Art Development grant from Arts NT, the Northern Territory government(2011) and Artist Run Initiative grant from Australia Council for the Arts(2012); Art of the Nomad (2012) and Territory Time (2010) at Head Quarter,Melbourne under a commission from the Next Wave Festival 2010. Zhou managed Territory Time Touring Project (2010 –2011) with the Presentation and Promotion Grant from Arts NT and curated anexpanded exhibition for Chan Contemporary Art Space.

Zhou was accepted by SydneyCollege of the Arts, the University of Sydney (SCA), as a visual arts researchstudent after obtaining a Bachelor of Visual Art at the Nanjing Institute ofArts in 2003. In Sydney, Zhou achieved a Masters of Multimedia Design at SCAand accomplished courses for Postgraduate Diploma of Interactive Media at theUniversity of Technology of Sydney. Zhou has worked as the Program Manager at24HR Art: Northern Territory centre for contemporary art from 2007 to 2013. Sheis currently studying Master of Contemporary Art at Victorian College of theArts, the University of Melbourne.
