Temple Export. 2012.
Bicycle wheels, timber, paints, photograph print, string, notes, cushion. 2000 x 1200mm.

Temple Export was created for Art of The Nomad, a group exhibition that features artists and curators from Darwin and Alice Springs. It was exhibited at the Chan Contemporary Art Space in March 2011.

* Detail information about Art of The Nomad can be found HERE.

In Temple Export Zhou built a portable prayer room that could be packed flat and wheeled. Simulating the function of a temple, the sculpture was decorated with the image of Ma Zhu, a goddess with the power to control the ocean and for whom Chinese sailors pray to before taking a long journey.

The work directed visitors to stop for a moment and pray by providing a cushion for kneeling down. Paper and pencil were provided on a plinth next to the cushion so that visitors had an opportunity to write down their wishes/messages. The work also asked the participating visitors to tie the notes on the strings in the sculpture. Giving the promise of keeping the notes unopened, Zhou destroyed all the notes at a burning ceremony in the end of the exhibition.

Zhou intends to draw out positive energy and hope for a better life and prosperous future from this ceremony.
